Environmental scientists and local activists are raising alarms over the ecological toll of frequent festivals held at high-altitude plateaus like Shandur and Qaqlasht. These sensitive ecosystems, once pristine, are now facing pressure from over-tourism, littering, noise pollution, and disruption of native flora and fauna.
In a recent report, experts from the University of Peshawar and WWF Pakistan warned that the vegetative cover in Shandur has diminished significantly over the last decade. Similarly, migratory bird patterns are being affected by excessive human activity during festival months.
Local authorities have pledged to develop sustainable tourism practices, including waste management, controlled access, and mandatory environmental impact assessments before large gatherings. Citizens and tourists are urged to act responsibly and preserve the natural beauty of these iconic landscapes.
